Vaughn Iyoha
Over the past four years at Seven Hills, Vaughn Iyoha has proven himself to be a skilled and seasoned athlete. Competing on the varsity soccer, basketball, and track teams, the senior has built an impressive athletic resumé, with an array of school records and conference and district titles to show for himself.
Iyoha feels that the Seven Hills community lends less support to female student-athletes, noting that this issue especially impacts the girls varsity basketball team. As a player, he appreciates that the styles of play in men’s and women’s basketball can be vastly different from one another, but doesn’t feel that this justifies the lack of interest in the women’s game. In his experience, people tend to be close minded when it comes to watching women’s sports, even at the high school level. “It’s okay to like one more than the other,” Iyoha affirms, “but it’s not fair to not give each one a chance.”
He believes that the difference in the play style associated with women’s basketball is often misinterpreted as a lack of effort. “It’s definitely a misconception that female athletes don’t work hard,” said Iyoha, “but that’s just not the case.”
Iyoha believes that the best way to increase the visibility of female student-athletes at Seven Hills is to foster a greater excitement for the team and their game. He encourages his peers to attend a girls basketball game if they have the chance, or even watch the live broadcast. According to Iyoha, “a lot more people would enjoy women’s basketball if they just gave it a chance.”
